What do we know about Sunscreen?!

Ahhh, the warm and sunny weather is upon us and it's my favorite time of year, just like many of you I'm sure.  We all start going outside more; walks, sitting outside to eat, picnics, going to the park, getting invited to cook "out" parties, and soon we will be going to the pool, the lake or the beach.  We all love that "sun kissed" look and heck, let's face it, we all look much better with a little "tan."  Just like the iconic Elizabeth Taylor sunning herself you see above.  Whether we like to have color or rather not have color we all can agree on wearing sunscreen is the absolute best thing for us right?  But have we actually looked to see what actual ingredients are in our sunscreen?!  I was shocked when I learned the truth about all of the harmful toxins that are in our sunscreens not to mention skin care in general.  Our skin is our largest organ and absorbs 8x faster than anything we could eat or drink.  So it would be smart of us to actually look at the ingrediants we are applying to our skin, especially our precious children's skin.

Read below some of the information that is out there on all the harmful toxins that are in most all sunscreens.

A consumer advocacy group has a warning for parents who think they‘re protecting their family with sunscreen: You may be getting burned.

The Environmental Working Group, a Washington-based nonprofit, has released an investigation of nearly 1,000 brand-name sunscreens that says four out of five don‘t adequately protect consumers and may contain harmful chemicals.

The group says that some of the products of the nation‘s leading brands — including Coppertone, Neutrogena and Banana Boat — are the poorest performers.

The active ingredients of sunscreens are compounds that absorb, reflect or block ultraviolet light. Sunscreens are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration not as cosmetics but as over-the-counter drugs. They’re rated based on their Sun Protection Factor (SPF); the higher the SPF, the better the protection against sunburn. (Please make sure you read that last sentence.  We've all been tricked to think the higher the number of SPF the higher we are protected.  Simply not true.)

The Environmental Working Group says that the SPF rating on a sun product is only part of what consumers need to know, and that the biggest problems with sunscreens are that they don‘t offer appropriate protection and that many contain unsafe ingredients.

Despite sunscreen use being higher than ever, skin cancer is still on the rise. The most common cancer in the United States, skin cancer accounts for nearly 50% of all cancer cases. 

The Environmental Working Group just released their fourth annual Sunscreen Guide, with recommendations for only 39 of the 500 sunscreen products reviewed. The EWG found many products misleading in their claims, lacking in adequate protection from all types of ultraviolet radiation, and containing many potentially hazardous chemicals. Because the FDA still has not issued any sunscreen industry regulations, which they began drafting 32 years ago, consumers are left to discover the safest products on their own.

EWG Senior Vice President For Research Jane Houlihan said, "Many sunscreens available in the U.S. may be the equivalent of modern-day snake oil, plying customers with claims of broad-spectrum protection but not providing it, while exposing people to potentially hazardous chemicals that can penetrate the skin into the body."

New FDA research data reveal that a type of Vitamin A (found on the label as "retinyl palmitate" or "retinol"), which is in 41% of sunscreens, may actually increase the growth of cancerous skin tumors and lesions. While vitamin A is used in many skin products for its antioxidant properties to slow skin aging, when in the sun it may have photocarcinogenic properties that can damage the skin more than protect it. The FDA's one year study found that lab animals coated in a cream with Vitamin A and exposed to sunlight daily developed skin tumors and lesions 21% sooner than the control animals with no vitamin A. While the data are only preliminary, the FDA's full assessment will be issued in October.

Try the Tracy Anderson Method

So many of my friends and family, and people that I don’t know have been asking me what type of work out I have been doing.  Some of you may have read my previous post about how much I love the Tracy Anderson Method.  Click here to read my blog post!

I said previously that next I was going to try the Tracy Anderson Metamorphasis. I have for about a year now and I absolutely LOVE it!!  You can not go wrong with her workout and the Metamorphasis is a full collection of workouts and you can choose which is best for you.  Omnicentric, Hipcentric, Abcentric, or Glutecentric.

For some of you that don’t want to commit to actually buying her dvd’s yet and I mean yet because you will fall in love with her method.  So, if I were you I would just commit to the Metamorphasis but in the meantime  I have made up my own full body workout  with Tracy Anderson Webisodes that I would love to share with you!!

Start with your arms.  It starts out with her free standing arms (no weights) that you will need to “control” while doing them.  Pretty much like flexing or resisting while you are doing the free standing arms.  This will really insure that you get the most out of your workout and the muscles with tighten and so will the skin!! Then you will need to use either 2-3 lb weights if you are a woman and 5-8- lb weights if you are a man.  This arm webisode is about 10 minutes and it ROCKS!!

This is an extra arm webisode if you would like to add it in.  This is an arm workout that Tracy created for Gwyneth Paltrow when she was training for Iron Man 2.  It ROCKS, especially after you do the arm workout above!!  Good Luck and you can do it!!!

Next is your abs. This ab webisode starts laying on the ground on your mat and then you will switch to standing abs.  Standing abs are amazing.  Just like when you do the free standing arms you will need to focus on your abs and put your mind in the muscle.  Flex the area you are focusing on when you are doing them.  Tracy’s ab workouts really work and really focus on the “sexy stomach” we all want.  This ab webisode is also about 10 minutes and will rock you!!

Last but not least is the Butt and Thigh webisode.  These are done on your mat and these are the “muscle exhaustion” exercises that she talks about.  This leg workout is amazing!  Just remember, keep your mind in your muscle and follow through on each movement.  This butt and Thigh webisode is about 16 minutes and will leave you drenched but it a “Oh so good way!”
