My Favorite Self Tanner & Tips

This is one of my all time best secrets!! For those who know me and for those who don’t.  You must know that I LOVE to be a “Bronze Goddess” !  But I DO NOT get in the sun or in a tanning bed.  I’m a firm believer in sun protection!!  Not only because I’ve seen it accelerate the aging process but also because of the major skin cancer factor.  There is another way!!  So how do I keep my skin looking Bronzed without UVA/UVB harmful rays? Why Self Tanner of course!

I have tried almost every single self tanner on the market.  No really, I have.  The self tanning products have come a long way from the (won’t say the brand name) orange bottle with the horrible smell and made you look orange back in the early 90’s. Now, there are some really great ones, but this is MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE. It goes on so smooth and is easy to apply.  And as for the smell, wonderful!  Like coconuts!! This tanner is to get the tan you’ve always wanted. What I love most is it is Safe and ok for your face too!

Tip: I do suggest using a Tanning MIT when applying. It makes everything go on smooth and won’t get on your hands. This one feels like velvet almost and doesn’t slip off your body!

Tan Detox. This salon-inspired home treatment is designed to remove unwanted self tan build up, leaving skin ultra soft and smooth. Tan Detox is pampering bath oil that combines a luxurious blend of lavender, lemon and hazelnut oils to help create a calming spa-like environment at home. Ideal for use as part of your beauty regime, Tan Detox returns the skin to its normal tone ready for a fresh application of self tan. Includes a gentle exfoliating cloth.

This is fabulous to get your skin exfoliated and ready for the perfect application of self tanner.  I put about 2 caps full in a bath and soak in the bath.  Then take the wash cloth and massage your skin in circular motions.  Get all of the old self tanner and dead skin off.  Then after the bath, dry off and apply a nice non-fragrant moisturizing lotion all over.  You need to wait a while before applying self tanner.  That’s why I suggest doing this bath the night before you want to tan, or do the bath in the morning, then that night apply the self tanner, then the next day your skin is looking fabulous and bronzed!!

Learning + Sharing = Growth

We have the blessing to live our life here on Earth.  Every day we have experiences and have the choice to learn from them.  Whether they happen to us or to others.  If we as humans, Gods children, do not take the time to learn and grow in every way, what is our journey here on Earth all about?  I am on a journey to continue to better myself.  To always be open to learning, growing, yearning to become the better me.  I think one of the best lessons I learned from a young age is to not judge.  God only knows what exactly is going on.  Especially don’t judge by outward appearances or what you think you may know about them, which opens yourself to making assumptions.  We all know when we assume we make an “ass out of u and me.”  And for some sad reason it is in our human nature to automatically believe the bad in people, even if it is not true, then to believe the good things when they are true.  Let’s all try to make a difference.  In ourselves and others.  If you always keep your heart and mind open you will be amazed at how people will surprise you in the best way as well as continuing to learn and grow as a person.  While we are on this journey of learning it is important that we give back and teach the things we have learned to be valuable.  I love helping and teaching to my younger (and older) friends and family.  It’s so rewarding.  If we all took a stance back…took the time to use our God-given senses and truly try to learn and see what really matters…take the time to listen to our heart, our soul, that’s what is important.  Have you ever looked in the mirror? I mean stare deep inside into your eyes.  You can’t lie and you can’t hide.  But it is a very freeing exercise if you do it….For me, it always comes back to, what would you have done unto you.  One of the best teachings of Jesus I must say.  Life is not about being perfect…nobody is…it is about truly trying, learning, wanting to be the best you you can be.

What do we know about Sunscreen?!

Ahhh, the warm and sunny weather is upon us and it's my favorite time of year, just like many of you I'm sure.  We all start going outside more; walks, sitting outside to eat, picnics, going to the park, getting invited to cook "out" parties, and soon we will be going to the pool, the lake or the beach.  We all love that "sun kissed" look and heck, let's face it, we all look much better with a little "tan."  Just like the iconic Elizabeth Taylor sunning herself you see above.  Whether we like to have color or rather not have color we all can agree on wearing sunscreen is the absolute best thing for us right?  But have we actually looked to see what actual ingredients are in our sunscreen?!  I was shocked when I learned the truth about all of the harmful toxins that are in our sunscreens not to mention skin care in general.  Our skin is our largest organ and absorbs 8x faster than anything we could eat or drink.  So it would be smart of us to actually look at the ingrediants we are applying to our skin, especially our precious children's skin.

Read below some of the information that is out there on all the harmful toxins that are in most all sunscreens.

A consumer advocacy group has a warning for parents who think they‘re protecting their family with sunscreen: You may be getting burned.

The Environmental Working Group, a Washington-based nonprofit, has released an investigation of nearly 1,000 brand-name sunscreens that says four out of five don‘t adequately protect consumers and may contain harmful chemicals.

The group says that some of the products of the nation‘s leading brands — including Coppertone, Neutrogena and Banana Boat — are the poorest performers.

The active ingredients of sunscreens are compounds that absorb, reflect or block ultraviolet light. Sunscreens are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration not as cosmetics but as over-the-counter drugs. They’re rated based on their Sun Protection Factor (SPF); the higher the SPF, the better the protection against sunburn. (Please make sure you read that last sentence.  We've all been tricked to think the higher the number of SPF the higher we are protected.  Simply not true.)

The Environmental Working Group says that the SPF rating on a sun product is only part of what consumers need to know, and that the biggest problems with sunscreens are that they don‘t offer appropriate protection and that many contain unsafe ingredients.

Despite sunscreen use being higher than ever, skin cancer is still on the rise. The most common cancer in the United States, skin cancer accounts for nearly 50% of all cancer cases. 

The Environmental Working Group just released their fourth annual Sunscreen Guide, with recommendations for only 39 of the 500 sunscreen products reviewed. The EWG found many products misleading in their claims, lacking in adequate protection from all types of ultraviolet radiation, and containing many potentially hazardous chemicals. Because the FDA still has not issued any sunscreen industry regulations, which they began drafting 32 years ago, consumers are left to discover the safest products on their own.

EWG Senior Vice President For Research Jane Houlihan said, "Many sunscreens available in the U.S. may be the equivalent of modern-day snake oil, plying customers with claims of broad-spectrum protection but not providing it, while exposing people to potentially hazardous chemicals that can penetrate the skin into the body."

New FDA research data reveal that a type of Vitamin A (found on the label as "retinyl palmitate" or "retinol"), which is in 41% of sunscreens, may actually increase the growth of cancerous skin tumors and lesions. While vitamin A is used in many skin products for its antioxidant properties to slow skin aging, when in the sun it may have photocarcinogenic properties that can damage the skin more than protect it. The FDA's one year study found that lab animals coated in a cream with Vitamin A and exposed to sunlight daily developed skin tumors and lesions 21% sooner than the control animals with no vitamin A. While the data are only preliminary, the FDA's full assessment will be issued in October.

Try the Tracy Anderson Method

So many of my friends and family, and people that I don’t know have been asking me what type of work out I have been doing.  Some of you may have read my previous post about how much I love the Tracy Anderson Method.  Click here to read my blog post!

I said previously that next I was going to try the Tracy Anderson Metamorphasis. I have for about a year now and I absolutely LOVE it!!  You can not go wrong with her workout and the Metamorphasis is a full collection of workouts and you can choose which is best for you.  Omnicentric, Hipcentric, Abcentric, or Glutecentric.

For some of you that don’t want to commit to actually buying her dvd’s yet and I mean yet because you will fall in love with her method.  So, if I were you I would just commit to the Metamorphasis but in the meantime  I have made up my own full body workout  with Tracy Anderson Webisodes that I would love to share with you!!

Start with your arms.  It starts out with her free standing arms (no weights) that you will need to “control” while doing them.  Pretty much like flexing or resisting while you are doing the free standing arms.  This will really insure that you get the most out of your workout and the muscles with tighten and so will the skin!! Then you will need to use either 2-3 lb weights if you are a woman and 5-8- lb weights if you are a man.  This arm webisode is about 10 minutes and it ROCKS!!

This is an extra arm webisode if you would like to add it in.  This is an arm workout that Tracy created for Gwyneth Paltrow when she was training for Iron Man 2.  It ROCKS, especially after you do the arm workout above!!  Good Luck and you can do it!!!

Next is your abs. This ab webisode starts laying on the ground on your mat and then you will switch to standing abs.  Standing abs are amazing.  Just like when you do the free standing arms you will need to focus on your abs and put your mind in the muscle.  Flex the area you are focusing on when you are doing them.  Tracy’s ab workouts really work and really focus on the “sexy stomach” we all want.  This ab webisode is also about 10 minutes and will rock you!!

Last but not least is the Butt and Thigh webisode.  These are done on your mat and these are the “muscle exhaustion” exercises that she talks about.  This leg workout is amazing!  Just remember, keep your mind in your muscle and follow through on each movement.  This butt and Thigh webisode is about 16 minutes and will leave you drenched but it a “Oh so good way!”

Tracy Anderson Method, Best Workout!

I’ve done all kinds of workouts.  I’ve trained hard for competitions as well as just “maintained” for my health and beauty purposes. After having my daughter I didn’t neccesarly put working out as high of a priority as I once did before having a child.  Not to mention having the luxury of “time”. Once I made the decision in my mind I was going to take my health and fitness seriously again, and commit to a routine, I wanted to find something that I look forward to do and MOST IMPORTANTLY showed me results!!

I had been hearing about the Tracy Anderson Method.  Her overall mission of her method is to strengthen the smaller muscle groups so that these muscles can pull in the larger muscles – which results in a lean figure that is not bulky.  That sounded like the womanly body that I like!  She has trained the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Lopez, Shakira, Courteney Cox and Kristin Davis.  I figured, what the heck.  My first purchase was the Tracy Anderson Mat Workout DVD.  This DVD is FABULOUS!!!!  She describes the purpose of this video “is to re-engineer your muscular structure, wake up your accessory muscles, pull in your larger muscles and shift your shape into something that you never knew you could achieve.”  And it is exactly that!  It is a FULL body workout, from head to toe!  It’s one hour and it flys by, but every minute you are working your muscles to the fullest!  After just a week I could see amazing results.  I am serious!  I have never done a workout program that showed me such results SO fast.  I do however workout 4-6 days a week!  I was and am committed and if you are, you will get results.  All you need is a mat, a chair and 3 lb. weights.  Check it out here!

I also purchased Tracy Anderson’s Beginner Dance Cardio.  She talks about doing her Dance Cardio (she has multiple Cardio DVD’s) in conjunction with her Mat Workout DVD. This DVD is high cardio and awesome for burning calories.  I was a former dancer but you don’t have to be a “dancer” to do these cardio dances.  There is a warm up and 4 short choregraphed dances.  They take their time teaching you the steps and go over it very well.  After you do the DVD once you will have it momorized for the coming times you workout.  Check it out here!
Tracy also just came out with a new line of DVD’s titled Metamorphosis.  “Metamorphosis is a full-body workout and doesn’t neglect any area of your body.  However, by selecting your body type, Omnicentric, Hipcentric, Abcentric, or Glutecentric, your problem areas will be targeted throughout your 90-day transformation.”  I have NOT tried this series yet, so I can’t comment on it.  Yet, it will be my next purchase!

I can however assure you the Mat DVD and the Beginner Dance Cardio are 2 Outstanding DVD’s.  I take them along with my mat and 3 lb. weights even when I travel!

And Men, Tracy’s method isn’t just for women.  If it’s good enough for Matthew Mcconaughey, it’s good enough for you too! Check out this arm webisode just to get an idea of her arm workouts!  It’s awesome!  I do this arm workout after the Dance Cardio Workout!
